Cinnamic acid, ethyl ester; Ethyl cinnamate; Ethyl trans-cinnamate; Ethyl β-phenylacrylate; Ethyl 3-phenylpropenoate; Ethyl 3-phenylacrylate; Ethyl 3-phenyl-2-propenoate; Ethyl (2E)-3-phenyl-2-propenoate

Applications

Ethyl Cinnamate is mainly used in spices essences, also excellent perfume fixative. It is an important kind of fragrance and spices intermediates. Ethyl Cinnamate can also be used as the intermediates of medicine and food additives. Because of its high boiling point and stability, it is appropriate to be used for baked goods.
Ethyl cinnamate is non-toxic and can easily be used in multi-user microscope facilities. This method opens up tissue clearing to a much broader group of researchers due to its ease of use, the non-toxic nature of ethyl cinnamate and broad applicability.

Stability

Stable. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, acids, bases, reducing agents. Combustible.

Storage

Store in cool place. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, acids, bases and reducing agents.

Production method

It can be obtained through the esterification between cinnamic acid and ethanol in the presence of sulfuric acid with a yield of about 60%. It can also be derived through the reaction bewteen benzaldehyde and ethyl acetate.
It can be obtained through the reaction between benzaldehyde and ethyl acetate in the presence of sodium metal.
It is derived from the heating of cinnamic acid, ethanol and sulfuric acid to 100 °C in the presence of aluminum sulfate.

Frequently Asked Questions about Benzyl Cinnamate

What is Benzyl Cinnamate? Benzyl cinnamate (molecular formula C16H14O2) is the chemical compound which is the ester derived from cinnamic acid and benzyl alcohol. It is a white to pale yellow solid or crystal substance that has a sweet balsamic odor. Benzyl cinnamate is used as a fragrance ingredient in a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products, including aftershaves, perfumes and colognes, skin care and hair care products. What else is Benzyl Cinnamate called? This chemical can be identified by different names, including: 3-Phenyl 2-propenoic acid benzyl ester, Benzylester kyseliny skoricove, Benzyl 3-phenyl propenoate, Phenyl Methyl, 3-phenyl-2-propenoate, Benzyl beta-Phenylacrylate, Phenyl Methyl 3-phenyl propenoate, Benzylcinnamoate, Cinnamein This may not be a complete list as manufacturers introduce and delete chemicals from their product lines Where is Benzyl Cinnamate found? ...

Carboxylic Acids and Esters Available at Landmark

Carboxylic acids are compounds containing a functional group called the carboxyl group (-COOH). The general molecular formula for carboxylic acids is CnH2n+1COOH. An ester is an organic compound where the hydrogen in the carboxyl group is replaced with a hydrocarbon chain. Esters are derived from carboxylic acids and (usually) an alcohol. The chemical formula of an ester is RCO2R ′ , where R is the hydrocarbon parts of the carboxylic acid and R ′ is the introduced group. Both carboxylic acids and esters contain a carbonyl group with a second oxygen atom bonded to the carbon atom in the carbonyl group by a single bond.  In a carboxylic acid, the second oxygen atom also bonds to a hydrogen atom. In an ester, the second oxygen atom bonds to another carbon atom. The names for carboxylic acids and esters include prefixes that denote the lengths of the carbon chains in the molecules and are derived following nomenclature rules similar to those for inorganic acids and sa...

10 Questions & Answers to Learn More about Cinnamic Acid

Cinnamic acid  (CAS NO. 140-10-3) is an important substance because it is widely used in perfume, food, photographic, polymer and pharmaceutical industries, as well as for clinical and toxicological studies. Do you know anything about cinnamic acid? Here is a list of questions & answers which can help you to learn more about cinnamic acid. What is cinnamic acid? Cinnamic acid has the formula C6H5CHCHCOOH and is an odorless white crystalline acid, which is slightly soluble in water. Cinnamic acid is a polyphenol and an antioxidant. It is created by the deamination of phenylalanine and it is then itself converted to any of the various polyphenols synthesized by plants. It is sometimes called the parent polyphenol because all of the myriad polyphenol compounds synthesized by plants are derived from cinnamic acid. Thus whilst cinnamic acid is itself an antioxidant, its real importance stems from its role in the plant synthesis of the many important polyphenol ant...
